5 Most Popular Hobbies in Retirement

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

One of our Boomerang members refuses to say the “r” word. If the word comes up in a sentence, she won’t even acknowledge it. Her husband thinks it’s hilarious because he retired almost two years earlier and they’ve been travelling ever since. Everyone has different feelings around retirement. For some, it’s something to look forward to. Others can’t imagine waking up and not going to the office and then there are those who don’t plan their retirement but are instead forced to retire due to any number of circumstances. Whatever bucket you fall under, retirement is a huge change. And one thing’s for sure, you’ll have a lot more time on your hands. How you fill that time is what can determine how much you enjoy this new phase of your life.

We’re here to help you out. Here are the most popular hobbies to keep you occupied after the “r” word starts to describe your phase in life.

What are good retirement hobbies?

1. Travel

I mean, do we really need to include this on the list? The first thing anyone thinks about when retirement comes up is travelling the world. What we will say is to try different ways of travelling. You may have been on a cruise, but have you ever tried a river cruise? Maybe skip the guided tour and venture out on your own. Our very own Grownup Travels blogger Jane Canapini gives great tips on how to add some adventure to your trips while still keeping it safe. Travel is a no brainer. Let’s move on.

2. Get creative

Retirement is the perfect time to start (or finish) all of those creative projects you’ve been too busy to get to. Painting, writing that book you promised yourself would happen years ago, photography, knitting; anything that ignites your creative juices is fair game. Don’t be afraid to learn some new skills. You can always count on Boomerang for our creative workshops.

3. Volunteer

Retirement is all about you. It’s what you want to do with your time after years of giving your time to something else. If you choose to volunteer, make sure it’s something you’re truly passionate about. More people will be asking you to join this board or be part of this group, but don’t feel bad saying no. You get to choose how you spend your time and determine the level of commitment you’re comfortable with. Volunteer with your heart, not with your head.

4. Teach/mentor

This can be as formal as teaching classes part-time at a local college or as informal as leading a Boomerang workshop. Either way, the goal is to teach on your own terms. If that’s still too much for you, try taking someone under your wing and acting as their mentor. The one-on-one relationship might be the perfect balance between your need to share your knowledge while still being protective of your time.

5. Get back to what you love

We can add ten more points to this list, but what’s important in retirement is doing the things you love. We get so busy when we’re working every day that we miss out on things. Family, passion projects, getting out of bed at noon without feeling guilty — these are all things that become possible during this phase of your life. Reconnecting with family, in particular, is a great place to start. If you’re like many Canadians, your family is spread out over the country and maybe even the world. Take some time to rekindle those relationships that you didn’t give the attention you wanted to while you were working.
