Summer is in full swing with temperatures rising and sunny skies across the country (dare we say it… finally). There’s a lot to take advantage of during the summer months. Here are our top 7 tips for having fun and staying healthy this summer:
1. Stay Cool
With temperatures rising year over year, air conditioning is becoming a necessity. But is it just us or do you also feel like you’re constantly battling indoor temperatures that cross the line from comfortable to freezing? Integrating a cooling fan may suit you better and keep your home at a comfortable temperature. We’re big fans of the Dyson Cool Fan, which is a quiet and efficient alternative to turning on the AC.
2. Go Local

Take a break from the sun and explore local attractions. Places like the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) offer plenty of programming over the summer months, giving you a chance to take part in new artistic experiences. Why not visit Toronto’s Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MoCCA), which has a pay-what-you-can admission policy, and then head to the St. Lawrence Market to indulge on lunch from local farmers.
3. Avoid Peak Hours
We’re all restless to get outside on the days when the humidex isn’t hitting 40 degrees, but avoiding the outdoors when it’s hot out isn’t always an option. The sun starts to peak around 10am, with temperatures peaking at 3 – 4 pm, making early mornings and early evenings the ideal time to get outside. It’s the perfect time to take care of errands like dog walking, watering the garden, or taking some time to relax outside.
4. Apply Sunscreen
The last thing anyone wants to deal with after enjoying time in the sun is a sunburn, let alone the effects that it could leave you with. Integrate sunscreen with a high SPF into your morning routine to help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays and remember to reapply throughout the day – especially if you’re sweating or swimming.
5. Wear Sun Safe Clothing
Whether you’re out for a leisurely stroll or taking a hike, it’s important to protect your skin. Limit your UV exposure by choosing clothing that offers an extra layer of protection through UV blocking fabrics. Clothing companies like REI offer an extensive array of sun safe clothing options.
6. Host a Barbecue
Celebrate the summer while taking in cooler temperatures by hosting an evening barbecue with friends and family. Prep food and drinks before your guests arrive, then sit back, relax, and enjoy the company.
